Here is an article I just have to talk about. The ego of a Doctor, even a good one, seems abounding.
The number of doctors able to deliver naturally if there are complications has dramatically dropped because of lost skills and lack of resourcing, according to two of the state’s leading maternity specialist.
This sentence Alone suggests that women aren’t able to birth a baby without a doctors skill. Most women birth absolutely brilliantly regardless to who is there. This also assumes that Doctors are the specialists in natural birthing. Apart from the women which are top of the specialist tree on this MIDWIVES are the specialists in normal birth. A doctor shouldn’t be involved. If they want to birth with women they should be midwives.
There is now only one public doctor in NSW who can deliver a breech baby vaginally – and women report it is difficult to find a public doctor to deliver twins naturally or who is prepared to do an intervention-free birth if the mother has already had a caesarean.
It has always been my biggest fear that obstetricians will feel compelled to do a dangerous caesarean section for example if the baby is just about to come out – rather than proceed with a normal delivery,” he said.
This Doctor, whom I’m sure is fantastic, is a man. How can he deliver a breech baby? What part of his anatomy does it come out of exactly? I find it almost incredulous that Obs have the right to say they are not prepared to allow an intervention free birth. GET A MIDWIFE they are specialists and will protect your rights to birth safely. I don’t mean midwives that have to work to the Policy but an Independent midwife who works with the woman at the centre.
“I think there is probably a general tendency for the junior, younger obstetricians to go more towards caesarean section because they are not skilled in some of these other things,” he said.
Where do they get off letting junior doctors make decisions regarding women and their birth with no collaboration and not even consideration on input from the women. Where are the women letting these people get away with this instead of saying NO.
“People are far more conservative in the things they will attempt to deliver.”
People? Who are these mysterious people.
People read these articles and believe all the rubbish that is given to them about skills levels and fear. What about the women? How about we make them feel empowered instead of afraid.
If obstetricians would concede the specialists in normal birth (other than pregnant women) they would find that plenty of us can facilitate women to birth normally and help women to make great choices. All of us have the skills necessary to birth with women carrying twins or a breech baby. How long before women click that if they want to birth naturally and safely then can the choice is theirs and the best thing they can do is GET A MIDWIFE.
