The homebirth retreat in the Blue Mountains of Sydney was fantastic (but very cold). We had a lot of fun getting there and I certainly had fun chatting, drinking and talking.
Jo Hunter and Natalie Dash organised everything and it was warm, fuzzy, informative and everything you want from experienced midwives imparting and sharing skills and knowledge.
We started with birth art (I am more the fire warming type so I have nothing to show), but after supper we did African drumming. Now this isn’t the Ooga Booga (as my lovely friend would say) of midwifery. This is women coming together learning new skills, sharing inadequacies that come with unfamiliarity and all of us letting go and having a ball. We danced drummed hollered and enjoyed our team building spirit.
After most went to bed I stayed around with a few others and drank and chatted the night away. While talking to a client of mine who was niggling, discussing my plan for getting home the next day.
In the morning there was Yoga. I was amazed how many turned up for this. I wasn’t one of them. I did walk through to the bathroom making quietly supportive noises!!
Breakfast was excellent. I love the community feel of eating in a shared dining hall.
Honey, another friend, checked flights on her Iphone and I made a plan of how to get to the airport for the next available flight to get home before my clients labour was established, but after my talk which was on facilitating a Breech homebirth.
I got very layered up due to the weather. I’m glad there was no dress code because I just can’t do power dressing very well. I think this in no way detracts from the quality of information given.
All pictures are courtesy of midwifery is catching. She has certainly caught the essence of my talk. I had no idea how much I moved around.
The weekend was made up of many great speakers but it’s my blog and I left before anyone else spoke so you’ll just have to take my word for it. It was amazing.

Hi Lisa,
It was so lovely to meet you and the other gorgeous SA women. Instead of your layered clothing I was rather hoping you’d do your presentation in your pink ski suit! There is something very humbling about listening to midwives present whilst wearing slippers. It was certainly a love in! Can’t wait for the next one.
