There is so much under cover talk about the review it could make your head spin. I am totally taken back by the college attitude.
I have seen a mail from Barb Vernon telling us to start letter writing. Is she kidding? What the hell does she think all the work on the reviews and the lobbying was all about. She is the CEO of our professional body. Does RANZCOG suggest that to get government recognition they try letter writing? After we have been led to believe that our professional body was lobbying on our behalf.
I have already been told once that as the Vice President of South Australia I should shut up and not slag off the college in public. Well I have the right to. I am a member, a very active out spoken one and I have the right to be pissed off about being sold down the river by the voice of mediocrity and the rush to get anything to happen at all cost. Now it has, they want us to letter write. I could bloody well laugh.
We have been told it’s a foot in the door. How? Up to now I have been successfully working with women at home, having great collaboration when necessary and actually getting some good support from inside the system, all without any provider number or insurance.
Now I have the prospect of becoming illegal. I hardly know what to say.
I am interested in the Maternity Coalition and HBA’s approach and am watching Justine Caines and the lovely Jo Hunter with interest and support.

Sounds like independent midwives and client choice has been sold down the river in favor of increasing hospital midwifery’s purchase. The college should be ashamed of itself.
Lisa I agree with your call to the ACM to make a public statement in support of independent/self employed/private/call-us-what-you-like midwives. ACM adopts the ICM Definition of the midwife (2005) which says a midwife may practice in any setting including the home …
And once a public statement has been made, ACM needs to support our right to exist. I think the ANF should be also enlisted in this cause by those who have membership in that powerful union.
As you have noted, having indemnity insurance does not make birth safer or make the practitioner any more responsible or dilligent.
